Two companion pieces to this program are available as PDF documents from the API Web site:

» The Great Divide: Female Leadership in U.S. Newsrooms, an API/Pew Center study

» Survival Guide for Women Editors, with chapters by some of the country’s leading editors

The research of anthropologist Helen Fisher, Ph.D., one of the foremost authorities on gender differences, shows that the workplace is changing in ways that can benefit from the natural talents of women.

Yet, newsrooms, with their defensive cultures, may not be in position to take full advantage of these talents - and that can adversely affect the health of the newspaper business.

When Dr. Fisher spoke about gender differences to API’s 2002 J. Montgomery Curtis Memorial Seminar, “Women in Newsroom Leadership,” journalists in the room were intrigued by her research. She has since addressed the national conventions of the American Society of Newspaper Editors and the Newspaper Association of America.

With this DVD production, API, with funding from The Gannett Foundation, hopes to bring her message to a wider audience. Our mission is to help newsroom managers recognize and value the different talents women and men bring to the table. Our hope is that greater understanding of what women bring to news organizations will increase the number of women in leadership.

The DVD comes with a Program Guide that can be used to lead a discussion of key points in the presentation.
