NOTE: The application deadline for seminars scheduled between January and June 2009 is Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2008.


API awards fellowships to journalism educators and newspaper employees from the United States and Canada to use in attending API seminars. These fellowships are financed through the generosity of individuals, organizations and trusts.

To apply for an API Fellowship:

  1. Review and select a fellowship from the list below.
  2. Select one of the following API seminars: (API fellowships are not available for one-day regional workshops.)
  3. Download and print out the fellowship application form.
  4. Fellowship applications must be submitted by fax or by U.S. mail. Please mail a separate application for each fellowship along with a supporting letter of documentation from the candidate's supervisor or academic department chair and a copy of the candidate's curriculum vitae.

API Fellowships for College-Level Journalism Educators

The James H. Ottaway Fellowship honors the late chairman of Ottaway Newspapers Inc. and member of the API Board of Directors. It covers tuition, hotel and meals.

The Rollan D. Melton Fellowship honors the late Reno Gazette-Journal columnist, president of Speidel Newspapers and API Board member. It is open to college-level journalism educators who are members of a recognized minority group, and covers tuition, hotel and meals.

The Minority Journalism Educators Fellowship is open to college-level journalism educators who are members of a recognized minority group, and covers tuition, hotel and meals.

API Fellowships for Newspaper Employees

The Malcolm F. Mallette Fellowship honors a former executive director of API. It provides tuition for a news editor or managing editor of a newspaper with daily circulation under 50,000.

NAA Minority Fellowships

API cooperates with the Newspaper Association of America Foundation to make NAA Minority Fellowships available for API seminars. The foundation sets eligibility requirements and makes awards independently. To download the application, click here.
