James Gentry

James Gentry, who along with John Haile were named Senior Fellows of The Media Center, consults frequently in convergence, helping newspapers and broadcast operations develop partnerships in the areas of content, advertising, promotions and online.
In 1999-2000, he was the consultant in helping the Tampa Tribune, WFLA-TV and Tampa Bay Online converge their news efforts in a new $34 million facility. Gentry also has worked with clients in Toronto, the Twin Cities, Salt Lake City, Topeka, KS, and Moline, IL. In the past 18 months, he made presentations at the APME Convention, NAA Marketing Conference, E&P Interactive Conference, and to the management teams of McClatchy Corp., Hubbard Broadcasting Corp. and Calkins Newspapers. Gentry is a principal in the consulting company InsideOut Media Partners, with John Haile, the former editor of the Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel. Prior to joining Kansas as dean in July 1997, Gentry was dean at the University of Nevada, Reno, for five years and a member of the faculty at the University of Missouri School of Journalism for almost 15 years.
In its July/August 2001 issue, Quill magazine wrote that KU's School of Journalism is "considered by many to be the model for innovative curriculum revision." Gentry was a reporter and editor for several newspapers before joining the Missouri faculty. Gentry received his Ph.D. in journalism with an emphasis on management and organizational behavior from Missouri in 1993.
