Robert J. McCartney

Assistant Managing Editor for Continuous News, The Washington Post
McCartney became the Washington Post's first Assistant Managing Editor for Continuous News in 2003. He oversees coverage of breaking news by the newspaper for www.washingtonpost.com , and is the newspaper's principal liaison with its Web site.
Earlier, McCartney was Managing Editor of the International Herald Tribune in Paris from 2001-2002. He resigned from that job when The Post sold its stake in the IHT at the end of 2002.
Before going to the IHT, McCartney was in The Post's newsroom as Foreign Editor (1999-2001), Maryland Editor (1997-1999), Deputy National Editor for Defense and National Security (1994-1997) and Local Business Editor (1992-1994).
Earlier, as a reporter, McCartney was The Post’s New York financial correspondent (1990-1992), Bonn bureau chief (1986-1989) and Mexico City bureau chief (1983-1986). He joined The Post as an assistant foreign editor in 1982, coming to Washington from Rome where he was a staff correspondent for the Associated Press. McCartney also worked as a staff correspondent for the AP-Dow Jones news service in Rome, and The Wall Street Journal in Boston. He grew up in Bethesda, Maryland and graduated from Amherst College.
