Joel Dreyfuss

Editor-in-chief, Red Herring
Dreyfuss is responsible for the print and Web versions of the publication. Mr. Dreyfuss brings more than 30 years of experience as senior editor and news executive at major companies including Time-Warner, Ziff Davis, Gannett and Bloomberg.
He joined Red Herring in August of 2004 and relaunched the print version of the magazine in November. Before returning to California last year, Mr. Dreyfuss was a senior writer at Bloomberg Markets magazine, producing in-depth profiles of technology-driven companies such as Kodak, IBM and Canon and covering venture capital and financial firms.
In 2000, as the editor-in-chief of Urban Box Office, he built a news and information site aimed at a young urban audience. The company raised $33 million before shutting down in the dot-com crash.
At Time Inc. from 1997 to 2000, Mr. Dreyfuss was a senior editor, where he was responsible for revamping the technology coverage of Fortune’s small business magazine (now called FSB) and launching the Fortune Small Business Web site. He co-edited two issues of a special Internet-oriented supplement to Money Magazine called Money.com. He also wrote a popular technology column, The Dreyfuss Report, in Fortune. In an earlier stint at Fortune, he served as an associate editor and as the Tokyo Bureau Chief where he reported from Japan, Korea and Thailand.
As editor-in-chief of Information Week from 1993 to 1996, he was responsible for completely revamping the magazine’s editorial coverage and substantially raising its profile. He was later promoted to editorial director and associate publisher.
Mr. Dreyfuss has also had broad experience in broadcasting. He served as a writer and producer at KPIX –TV, a CBS affiliate in San Francisco in 1977-79, where he was the weekend producer, responsible for both the 6 and 11 p.m. broadcasts. He has appeared as an expert on many television programs including Charlie Rose, Bloomberg TV, MSNBC and other national television programs.
Mr. Dreyfuss earned a Bachelor of Science degree at The City College of the City University of New York and was an Urban Journalism Fellow at The University of Chicago. He is a former Pulitzer Prize juror, a former member of the board of the American Society of Magazine Editors and a founding member of the National Association of Black Journalists. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He has lived in Washington, San Francisco, and Tokyo and New York City.
