Mark Anderson

Mark AndersonMark Anderson
Online Project Manager, Winston-Salem Journal / JournalNow.com

Mark Anderson, who has been a journalist for 19 years (12 professionally), joined JournalNow.com as new media editor on May 14, 2001. Prior to JournalNow.com, Mark was with Total Sports, an Internet sports company in Raleigh. After graduating from the University of North Carolina, he began his career as a sports reporter in Washington, N.C., in 1992, where he won three state press association awards. He moved to the sports copy desk at the Winston-Salem Journal in 1993. He took over as sports editor of the Gaston (N.C.) Gazette in 1997. There, he managed a staff of eight, including full-time beat reporters for the Charlotte Hornets, Carolina Panthers and NASCAR. The Gazette’s sports section won six awards from the Associated Press Sports Editors during that time. In 2000, Mark went to Total Sports as a Web site director, where he supervised production on a number of sites, including playing a key role in production and coverage for the NCAA’s www.finalfour.net, which had more than 2.5 million unique visitors and more than 70 million page views in March/April of 2001. After the dot.com bust, he moved to JournalNow.com as the new media editor. His initial responsibility was to manage the news production staff to put the Winston-Salem Journal online and to create original content. He was the communication link between print and the Web. As online project manager, he’s retained many of those functions, while adding responsibility for project launches (news and advertising), marketing and more. In the last two years, his team at JournalNow.com has won five national awards, including the SPJ’s Sigma Delta Chi and Green Eyeshade awards, plus a second-place Green Eyeshade finish and an Eppy Award finalist spot. Their signature projects are: Against Their Will (North Carolina’s Sterilization Program, http://againsttheirwill.journalnow.com) and Murder, Race, Justice: The State vs. Darryl Hunt (http://darrylhunt.journalnow.com).
