A Workshop from the Reynolds National Center for Business Journalism![]()
The seminar is full. Registrations are no longer being taken. Topics to be covered in the free one-day workshops include: deciphering financial statements and Securities and Exchange Commission documents, covering business and the economy more aggressively, ethics in coverage, and effectively handling the business angles found in all beats. These workshops launch what will be a total of 60 single-day workshops held around the country each year for the next three years. The Center, based in Reston, Virginia, at the American Press Institute and funded by a grant from the Las Vegas, Nevada-based Donald W. Reynolds Foundation, has the goal of improving the nation’s financial coverage. "Business is a lead story in today’s news and there is business in every beat," said Andrew Leckey, director of the Donald W. Reynolds National Center for Business Journalism. "We want not only business editors and writers to attend, but also those journalists at small and large publications who from time to time cover business issues." "I don't see how a better investment could be made in the future of business journalism than this program to make training available to reporters and editors at the grassroots level all across the land," said Byron Calame, a deputy managing editor of The Wall Street Journal and a former president of the Society of American Business Editors and Writers. "It's also very important that the program will be available to journalists who aren't directly involved in business and financial reporting, because the tools they will be given can help improve coverage in many areas." The San Jose workshop on Tuesday, Nov. 18, is at the San Jose Mercury News (750 Ridder Park Drive). It is hosted by the California Newspaper Publishers Association and Knight Ridder.
