Mr. Buttry has spent 36 years in the newspaper business. He was a reporter, editor and writing coach for the Omaha (Neb.) World-Herald, Des Moines (Iowa) Register, Minot (N.D.) Daily News, Kansas City (Mo.) Star and Times and the Evening Sentinel in Shenandoah, Iowa. He will become editor of The Gazette and GazetteOnline in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in June. Mr. Buttry was named director of Tailored Programs for the American Press Institute in 2005, devoting much of his time in the research and training of API’s Newspaper Next innovation project. He is writing a report on the use of interactive databases to build audience and generate revenue, due for release in late spring 2008. He will continue doing some training and research for API after joining The Gazette. Mr. Buttry has trained journalists and newspaper executives at more than 200 newspapers, seminars and conferences in more than 40 states and Canadian provinces as well as Mexico, Japan and Germany. He is content coordinator for the No Train, No Gain Web site and a columnist for API’s Web site. His newsroom training materials and commentaries have been translated into eight languages. Mr. Buttry attended API’s Train the Trainer seminar in 2003 and the Executive Development Program in 2005.
